 The Yangtze River is the longest river of Asia, stretching 6,300 km (3,900 miles) in length from East to West across China. Yangtze River passes through the spectacular Yangtze Gorges, which are noted for their natural beauty. In 1994 Three Gorges Projection began on the Three Gorges Dam near Yichang. The Yangtze River was diverted after four years in November 1997. The first group of generators began to generate power in 2003, and a permanent ship lock is scheduled to open for navigation the same year. The entire project is to be completed by 2009, when all 26 generators will be able to generate power. The dam will measure about 600 feet and about 1.5 miles wide. The dam is expected to help control the flooding of the Yangtze River Valley. In addition, river flows will make the Three Gorges complex the largest electricity-generating facility in the world. After the projection, many noted historical relics and cultural heritage will not be affected by the inundation because they are located above the inundation line or downstream of the dam site.
